-VR effective (the VR switches are well positioned to use by your thumb, and it takes a hard click to switch between, which makes it difficult to be swiched accidentally)

The real name of it is: DX SWM VR ED IF Aspherical....(Long name indicates its a modern lens with nikon's all technology thrown in, or you may call it marketing HYPE)

The range is very useful, a very good walk around lens(especially for TRAVELing)

Image quality is very good at the wide end, good at the normal focal length and nearly excellent at the tele end.

4XX gram (weight) is just right for a zoom and well balanced at the D90 even without batt. grip.

Distortion is very little (comparatively) (think about its range 18-105, some prime lens produce more distortion than it does!)

The only drawback will be the small aperture at 105 (that's why it has to be a VR)

Some say the zoom ring is poor positioned, well, yes its a nikon's new style, with focus ring at the back. but i find no problem at all becos the zoom ring is very wide and the focus ring is very narrow. It also uses different material for the 2, so i never get confused

People always comment on lens' colour reproduction. I doubt their accuracy on that, becos we all see the world differently, some people like warm colours, some don't. Also its always the responsibility of your camera to tune tones when set at Auto, otherwise its YOUR responsibility to set it right. For this lens paired with my new D90, I see no big issue on colour reproduction, that's all I can comment on.

本人用開C記,最近買多部N記來玩,使用D90同埋呢支KIT鏡一個月左右,用左佢會覺得出街影相是一件輕鬆既事(呢樣都好重要架,試過用EOS40D + 18~85,100~300上泰山,結果令我以後都慢左帶大機去以上山為主既出遊),因為佢既焦段已可滿足我既一般需要(當然打鳥同捕蝶就有D難度啦),,整體而言係一支好好既生活鏡

-價錢合理
-對焦快及準
-影像質素高
-輕

-膠鏡身和膠mount (勉強算是缺點，不過對使用沒什麼影響)
-沒有鏡身焦距尺(其實沒大作用，有好像專業點)

經常聽到別人問(包括自己)此鏡和18-200mm如何取捨，最終自己真正使用過兩支鏡後得出以下幾方面感受:

銳利度: 18-105mm 較好
成象: 18-105mm較好
顏色 : 18-105mm 較自然
對焦 : 差不多
映象變形 : 18-200mm (於18mm時) 桶形失真嚴重很多

無疑，18-200mm焦距的確非常好用，但最後基於以上原因加上價錢及照片質素考慮我還是放棄了18-200mm而選用了此鏡。非常好的kit lens.

一直都想 nikon 有支 wide 至 中距 vr 旅行鏡, 之前用 18-135 都ok, 係無vr 135mm 會手震, 呢支係可以話合晒我要求, 尤其我用d40. 銳利及成色係 nikon 的 style.

VR works very well.

Plastic mount. (In fact, I do not find any problems with it)
Occasionally, I will turn the focusing ring when I attempt to zoom.
Focus speed is not as fast as expected for a AFS lens.

It is very sharp and portable. Good for general, outdoor and travel shooting. VR is useful which able to get sharp pictures as well as shutter at 1/15 setting. It replace my 17-35/2.8 and 85/1.4 lenses.

For theatre shooting, bring a large aperture lens together with you. it is because VR cannot help to freeze motional pictures. It only helps to prevent image blur caused by camera shake.

Nowadays, FF format is getting common. For a DX lens, HK$2,150 is reasonable. If you will not change to FF format in the nearest future, you may go ahead for the much more expensive 16-85VR.

All in all, it is a nice and affordable all around lens.

18-105mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR 是很適合日常用的鏡。最少它細少得來，成像也有保証，拿它來當 f/5.6 恆定光圈鏡來用也不錯。現在只剩下價錢的問題了 .....
