Large Aperture, a must in low light shooting
performs much better than the f1.8 version in low light shooting, as it is 2/3 a stop larger in aperture setting than f1.8

fast tracking under good lighting, sport able if under sunlight (outdoor sport like street basketball) as it is what i tried with friends

try spot metering mode on Camera and shoot portrait without flash, you will love its result and be blown away, as it is amazing (on a D3)

I am still using a SB-800 which does not support the D3, D300's 51 points AF system, it is pity that the AF assist of SB-800 wont be much of a great help in assisting your focusing needs in dim light, if you really love this lens and will shoot with flash, you must get a SB-900 to make full use of new camera with this lens,
it is very very sharp, dont push your camera's sharpness too much, as it will make the images look wired, hair is a big concern when there's too much sharpness, and the sky may look wired too,
it is indeed the best lens nikon has to match with cameras like D3, and D700, a wonderful point and shoot lens, and excellent low light capability, at a very very affordable price

一早聽説NIKON會出AFS50.4或.2，但是價格也是嚇壞人（近5千），還是安分點好，加上爲了不浪費匯豐10% rebate，才入貨（百記1880元，扣10% rebate才1692元，肥花的2手貨都差不多，唯一可能2手是MIJ有些優勢，但強大的祖國我就對它有信心了）。個人覺得在室內及晚間環境F1.4還是有優勢的，雖然只比F1.8大半級光圈，用來拍狗狗又可不用閃光燈, 免去光線傷害眼睛的擔憂與狗狗不安，配在FILM機上（FM10）也很好，我就沒有投訴了。

之前從朋友手中借來玩了一段時間，很不俗的一支定焦鏡頭。只是 50mm 放在數碼機身上就變了 75mm，不是想像中的標準焦距。這也使我最後買入同廠 35mm f/2 的主要原因之一。收細一、兩級光圈成像會更加之好 (當然以定焦作比較)。還有不要加 filter，因為是會出光斑的。加些少錢買一個遮光罩 (我用大陸製的金屬遮光罩) 會令到成像更理想。
其實，對焦的聲浪大，也不是大得非常嚇人的地步，只是比有 SWM 的鏡頭大一點；而且 50mm 對焦時鏡組要走的距離很短，所以對焦的時間是很短的，也就是說對焦聲音不會太長。
它是沒有內置 motor 的，所以放在 D50、D40及 D40X 這類機身上，會成了手動鏡。

個人覺得光圈2.0以上已不太好, 成像有點鬆, 收細到2.2或以下會更銳利. 去旅行帶上它也不覺負擔, 在室內及晚間環境大派用場. 用來拍嬰兒又可不用閃光燈, 兔去光線傷害眼睛的擔憂. 如用來拍小朋友, 由於在大光圈時清晰範圍有限, 而小朋友又比較動態, 很容易會對錯焦. 用來拍靜態主體如模特兒、物件等會比較容易. 如果不是50mm 1.8 用料太一般, 也不會花多1300元去賣50mm 1.4, 而1.8-1.4那幾度光圈又不是經常用到. 比 50mm 1.8 重, 不過就是因為這樣手感好很多. 說到底只是多花點錢來買點虛榮心而已.
