M50 is my second EF-M body. Used for only a week, it has greatly transformed my view on the camera industry.
Having using M43 for the last 3 years, I now feel it is the time to retreat from that highly costed system and put my hard earned bucks on good use. After all, there is no point to spend time and money on a dying system where entry market is totally gone. Canon EF-M, especially M50 has a strong communities of users globally who are able to help one and others.
M50 is produced in 2018. In today standard, it is a very new camera. My first impression on this is it is very responsive, AF is snappy at decent light, shutter is quiet and the lens IS is decent (good through 1/8-1/10s. One of the most important feature M50 have are the abilities to shoot 4k video and 360 vary angle screen which has touch function.
Overall, the camera is easy to use. Its design catered large audience ranging from beginners to less demanding enthusiasts as well as professional youtubers, making it a great commercial success. Despite being more vlogger orientated than conventional photography, the M50 still scores high in terms of photography. However, with lack of external controls and single SD card slots has turned down appetite of some professional photographers, who may prefer EOS R or Canon DSLR instead.
The after market price of M5 and M50 tell us something very interesting. Despite M5 is suppose to be a higher tier camera, with faster AF, faster continuous shot (11FPS vs 8FPS) and 25% extra battery life, it lacks critical features almost all photographers and professional youtubers want, especially the lack of rotating LCD screen).
I hold strong outlook for the Canon M50 and hope Canon will keep doing it right. Making camera the mass wanted, which is easy and rewarding to use, continue to engage the community. I hope the next M50 could have USB charging capacity, more lenses to choose from and got more video options.
