I has been using Fuji f30 for 2 years. It is a wonderful DC with very impressive picture quality (of course not comparable to D40).
I did have any plan to buy any DC but the price of d40 kit set was too attractive at HK$2500 at Harvey Norman in Australia even cheaper than some DCs. It is also my first Nikon camera ever. I still have a canon SLR.
D40 is very light and convenient to carry with you daily. No complaints about functions, picture quality, battery and weight. Less choices of lens means saving me some money anyway. I dont want to spend too much on lens.
In conclusion, I could not find any DSLR like D40 quality at this price range.
Setting is extremely simple. By default I use A-mode and set Auto ISO, with minimum shutter speed of 1/30 and up to ISO 1600. Paired this with a Sigma 30/1.4, I can select from a wide range of aperture to achieve different depth of field. Even it's indoor low light, I never need to use a flash, so the skin color of portraits I took is always natural. This is especially important to me as I am shooting my children mainly.
I crave for D90... but seriously, I really don't need a D90 to shoot nice photos. D40 paired with a fast prime lens is all I need.
