Sharp super zoom lens
At F5.6 image quality is sharper than all kit lens from Olympus
AF is Fast when with Olympus Body
Convenient, no more lens switching
Good tele-portrait lens at 70-150mm range.
Very low market price as of today
缺點:
Not weather sealed
Vulnerable to dust, splash and mold if not handled properly
Why don't include Lens Hood and Lens Bag, Olympus?
Image quality not as good at wide end when F4
Aperture shrinks too fast at wide end from 14-45mm range
評價:
Thanks to a generous ching who sold this super zoom to me.
First impression is that this lens is super easy to use. It covers almost all common used zoom range, has very reliable, snappy AF and of course decent image quality that match the kit lens like the 14-42mm II, 14-42mm II R, 12-50mm EZ and the 14-42mm EZ at wide open.
Stepping aperture up to F5.6-8, the lens starts producing image quality that match 14-45mm Lumix G Lens, if not better. The effect of refraction kicks in when F value is over F8. If you are a lazy guy like me, try set the aperture at F5.6 constant, so you don't need to worry about degradation of IQ at wide end.
One main disappointment of this lens is its apertures drops too fast at wide end. Starting from F4 at 14mm, the aperture shrunk to F4.7 (-1/2 Step) @25mm and to F5.4 @45mm (-2/3Step), render it not useful at wide-to- standard portrait and poor light gathering at wide end. The aperture stabilizes at 70mm till 100mm and slightly shrunk to F5.6 at 150mm. Such feature allow the lens be good portrait lens at 70mm-150mm range.
Frankly, this is the second time buying this lens. I sold my first very same lens because I feel owning a superzoom lens is "not cool" or "being amateur" so I should stick with Pro Lens and Prime lens.
"What's the point of doing photography if you do not enjoy it?"
As time goes by, I realize I enjoyed photography in flexible manners. It is not I don't know what focal length should I use, but rather I want to use all the focal lengths to cover the types of photography without the need of changing lens often.
Travelling is my greatest hobby ever, and you simply cannot switch lenses when travelling with others or taking group photos with friends. Especially, considering that most of them has no understanding in photography. Furthermore, if you spend too much time taking photos, how can you enjoy the food, the people and the culture of the destination? Travelling light means travelling more.
Therefore, I sold some of my prime lens and keep only 20mm F1.7 and 45mm F1.8 in case of low light environment or portrait oriented setup are needed.
My 12-50mm EZ lens also sold to other after discovering its limitations on low-light condition and very disappointed bokeh effect. Don't get me wrong, 12-50mm EZ is still a good lens for rookie still searching their photography needs thanks to its wide coverage, extreme reliability, integrated Marco and various control methods. However, for experienced photographer like me, 12-50mm feels like eggs placed in too many baskets, making it lack of outstanding features to be embraced.
In short 12-50mm has lots of features but not doing any of them outstandingly. Contrarily, the 14-150mm is a dedicated lens to shoot still images, offering better IQ, better coverage and better bokeh especially at tele-end, making it one of the best travel lens for those with limited budget.
I would recommend amateur photographers who demands flexibility to try out the M43 super zooms, especially this 14-150mm lens. The lens offers best flexibility of all, high quality images at a budget. Recent market disruption also implies people are ditching M43 camera in favor of FF mirrorless cameras in coming years, making previously expensive M43 lenses now at attractive price range.
