Maximum aperture at f2.8 totally usable. Sharpness is beyond f4.5 from 24-120. I read from some sites saying that sharpness of both lenses are same relative to maximum aperture (like f2.8 from 24-70/2.8G has same sharpness as f4.0 from 24-120/4G, 4.0 to 5.6, etc). That earned 24-120 a lot of praises especially after the price drop. However this is not true anymore. 24-70/f2.8E is way sharper.
Good bokeh for general purpose. 70 mm @ f2.8 is better than 120 mm @ f4 in my eyes. The beautiful isolation of subject from background also helps perceived sharpness.
Fast auto focus even on D610. Hard to quantify but tracking of moving subject has certainly yielded more focused pictures.
缺點:
Noticeably heavier, but not as heavy as thought. On D610, the weight distribution is better and thus doesn't feel much extra. However that's purely a feeling and time will tell.
This lens is big. With 82 mm barrel it is getting close to league of 70-200/2.8. The combo is a lot bigger and longer than with 24-120.
Distortion is worse at 24 mm; much worse. Lightroom helps but manual intervention is necessary at times.

Losing the range from 70-120 did not bother me as much as I thought. I was stupid enough to force myself in using up to only 70 mm for a period of time. Given the improved sharpness and better bokeh, if you publish to Facebook at resolution recommended, cropped 70 mm from 24-70 is as good or better than 120 mm from 70-120.
Vignetting is worse. Lightroom works great in this manner. However for me preview is not accurate at all (darker). I have vignetting correction turned off to squeeze extra buffer.
The hood is indeed hard to screw in or out in the beginning. But after a short while, either I got used to it or it just ran in. Don't see this as a problem in medium term or longer.
Final words:
VR + f2.8 works great under low lights like indoors and/or evening events, birthday parties, and family photos in these venues. Fast(er) autofocus is a bliss for shooting anything that moves: in my case, my kids. If all of the weight, size, and price tag do not bother you, this is simply the best mid range zoom one could get.
I didn't mention price; this lens is EXPENSIVE. I made up my mind when I knew I have lots of indoor and evening events coming. I was not satisfied with f4 from 24-120 and I needed solution to either bringing down ISO or up shutter. I knew I could sell this lens with little loss so I gave it a try. And then? The 24-70 hasn't been off my camera since (for 2+ months). I never hesitated to use f2.8 even in daylight for bokeh. In my humble opinion, if could afford, this is when money could buy you confidence (but not skill or composition, ha) and versatility.
