I bought this lens some 5 years ago. At that time, it was the 'cheapest' L lens with IS feature. However, the motor broke down once (~ 2yr ago) and had to be replaced/repaired for an extra $2k or so. Nonetheless, I use this lens so often that the cost-per-use is actually lower than say for eg: my Tamron 90mm Macro.
Regarding the lens performance: This lens is a bit soft at F4 in both wide or tele. When downstopped to F5.6, the tele end is much sharper. At F6.3 upwards, the wide end then becomes very sharp. IS feature works as advertised. However, the image is better with IS turned OFF than turned ON. So if you dont need IS, pls turn it OFF.
In fact, 24-105 is the best 'kit' lens in the world because it is bundled with the 5D2. Before the Japanese tsunami, this lens can be had for about $7k, which is an awesome deal! But now, the price of this lens goes back to about $8-9k.

優點:
1. 方便。有人話APSC機會無咁方便。我用7D. 24-105mm 變左38-168mm 比 FF蝕左12mm 唔夠wide. 但長焦多左63mm. 好好用。F4＋IS 晚上或室內都難佢唔到。之前用開tamron支B005， 17﹣50 F2.8 有防震版。室內表現24-105真係全勝。

IS, 24-105超方便,一鏡可走天下(全幅),成像一流,
缺點:
任何焦距都有變形.但比Nikon新鏡24-120mmf4.0VR好,四邊黑角嚴重,

Canon好鏡,f4.0可用,收5.6後影像超好.IS可算這支鏡靈魂.比Canon24-70mm F2.8L要收至f4光圈才可用,真是算好用.鏡頭輕巧,用料不太可靠,
優點:
Value for money. Much less field curvature problem like 24-70 L. Range good enough for daily use (exlcuding the tele range). Very high photo quality for general use. Of course can't compare with pime lens. IS help me to take photos even at 1/5 second.
缺點:
Not good for apsc body. (not wide enogh)

要半按之後等一等,IS起動先按,唔係IS可能無效

我用六千大元買左一支二手返嚟餵無敵兔食,方便,質素,價錢好平均
除咗24-105之外,再加三支 ( Sigma 12-24 EX DG HSM, Sigma 50 f1.4, 小白IS) , 咁就都唔使點樣再買鏡咯~~~除非又屎忽痕啦~~=.=
題外話~~S50.4 我係用450D時候買,當時已經好靚好sharp,衣家插落無敵兔度,嚇我一跳,sharp就不在話下, 啲散景靚到賴屎~誠意推介 (要留意走焦問題)
